A study by the Dutch quality mark Keurmerk Verantwoorde Affiliates (KVA) has revealed that 10 popular artificial intelligence tools are frequently recommending unlicensed gambling operators to users in the Netherlands.
The research, published on October 2, 2026, evaluated ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, Perplexity, Claude, Grok, DeepSeek, Mistral Le Chat, and Meta AI. Researchers tested these tools using neutral queries, leading questions, and research-oriented prompts to observe how they handle requests related to online casinos.
When presented with neutral queries about the best online casinos, eight out of the 10 tools suggested unlicensed operators. Only Claude and Meta AI declined to provide recommendations during this phase. Meanwhile, Google AI Mode, Mistral Le Chat, DeepSeek, and Grok provided names of unlicensed sites without verifying them against Cruks, the Dutch self-exclusion registry. When the questions were framed specifically as research inquiries, every single one of the 10 tools ultimately listed illegal operators, despite five of them initially refusing to answer such prompts.
The study also found that Copilot, Mistral Le Chat, and Gemini incorrectly identified certain unlicensed platforms as having valid licenses from the Dutch regulator, KSA. Additionally, some tools presented the absence of mandatory identity verification or the lack of Cruks checks as a positive feature for players.
